13-year-old Callum started breeding chicks from his parents' cockerel and hen in the garden. Still in education, he'd use his spare time on evenings and weekends to prepare the chickens to sell at a local market.
Soon after he realised the profitability, he saved the money up to buy an incubator for his eggs. An investment of a £55 incubator led to the hatch of hundreds of chickens.
18 months after setting out on the venture, 'Clydach Poultry' was becoming a local success story! Breeding over 3,000 chickens a year, Callum was ready for the next step...
Not content with the chickens alone, Callum converted one of the stables on the farm into a shop where he began to sell chicken food and supplies.
The next big thing...
With a buzzing 'shop' in the middle of a Welsh farm and a thriving poultry company, Callum yet again looked for the next thing.
Unhappy with the quality of the branded poultry feed he was selling, Callum studied livestock nutrition in depth for months. He developed his own ration, which led to his first product, Natural Layers Pellets from Clydach.
The Clydach range of natural poultry feeds outperformed the market.
It was the winter of 2016, after a tough and cold year farming, Callum decided that the nutritional aspect of the business was the most scaleable. He used his passion and expertise for nutrition to develop an exceptional range of foods for dogs.
With Callum's network of free-range, Welsh and British farmers, he was able to source high levels of fresh meat, fish and poultry for his recipes.
No slowing down...
The Clydach brand went from strength to strength, growing in both turnover and tonnage.
Callum started targeting independent pet stores, farm shops and grocery retailers - asking them to stock the Clydach range.
And the journey continues...
